This week Katy Perry released the teaser for her upcoming video for her newest single, “Wide Awake.” Katy premiered “Wide Awake” at the Billboard Music Awards in May with a strange performance that had us fearing for the song's future. However, despite this somewhat awkward first performance, “Wide Awake” is slowly climbing both the radio and singles charts and is a genuinely good song. With the video set to premiere June 19th, here's a quick review of the single.
“Wide Awake” is one of the three brand new tracks on Katy Perry’s newly re-released Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection. The song fits Perry’s typical style of simple lyrics made powerful by their overall message and musical delivery. We have a feeling that an acoustic version of this song could potentially be mind blowing, much like the acoustic version of her other hit about the loss of love, “The One That Got Away.” The only problem with the similarity between these two is that “The One That Got Away” is the only single from Perry’s Teenage Dream album that did not hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (it peaked at #3). |
Katy Perry has said that the song was written for her upcoming movie, Katy Perry: Part of Me (3D), which will probably lead to the single increasing in sales and radio plays when the movie opens nationwide on July 5. The movie, the press whirlwind that is sure to accompany it, and the soon-to-be-released music video (premiering June 18 on VEVO and MTV) may also give us more insight into the song and its meaning, also potentially leading to an increase in sales and plays.
Overall, the song does a good job of being identifiably a Katy Perry song while still showing a newer and more mature version of Katy Perry. It sounds great on the radio and is a fitting final single (or, as the teaser puts it, final chapter) for her amazingly successful Teenage Dream era.
